self-righteous do-goodery is rather like trying to remove a tiny gnat from a drink
but in fact swallowing an enormous camel of hypocrisy.

Weightier issues are ignored in favour of the easy fix.

In modern welfare terms it is easier to raise benefits to the poorest a few
percent than it is to tackle their poverty at its root.
